TAKE NOTE: A tricycle is a motorcyle with an attached sidecar. In Manila, a tricycle is a tricycle, but in Cebu, a traysikad takes the name. Majority of registered tricycles are used as public conveyances.
Public commuters just like myself take a tricycle every so often. In the Philippines, tricycles are a ubiquitious mode of transportation – from the hinterlands of Mindanao to the urban landscapes of Makati. Tricycles serve as the link between bahay and palengke, or the subdivision’s gate and the lowly bungalow unit one has in the middle of nowhere.
Tricycle engines make so much noise that some homeowners’ associations have banned tricycles from entering their suburban villages. Aside from the noise, tricycles are also a very pollutive lot.
No study so far has been undertaken to measure how much impact a lone tricycle makes on the environment. Nevertheless, one can never fail to notice not only the noise pollution a tricycle makes, but also the belch a tricycle engine spews.
Finally, a local group has come forward to provide a battery-driven tricycle. The city of Puerto Princesa in Palawan province about 580 kms. south of Manila, thru its mayor Edward Hagedorn, has launched Trikebayan, an electric tricycle converted from the gasoline version. A rechargeable 36-watt battery drives the noiseless, smokeless engine.
The electric tricycle can’t trod through the streets of Manila, though, since the unit is still not flood-proof. But that’s a small detail that can be easily remedied. At least, for now, despite all the electric vehicles coming our way, not only do we have an electric vehicle we can really have use for, but also we have something we can proudly say, this is Filipino-made.

first it was the e-jeepney, then the absorbed natural gas (ANG) trike, and now an electric trike.
i am so amazed at the attention filipino tinkerers and entrepreneurs are paying to our environment and the welfare of the riding public.
i also have a working prototype of a vehicle that fits in the trike segment category of our public transportation.
my vehicle has four wheels, has the same or less footprint as a regular trike, sits 5 passengers and one driver.
it uses all locally (new) available materials and can be assembled by local manufacturers.
it addresses all the negative aspects of tricycles and provides for the future use of ANG, CNG, LPG and electric propulsion
i’d like to find interested parties who would invest in finishing my project and bring it to the market.

We are interested in various types of electric vehicles and equipment to avoiid carbon monoxide troubles as well as less noise.
We would like to manufacture a small very unique multi-tasking electric remote contolled construction equipment.
While an open air type of vehicle may be beneficial and widely used in a warm climatic area such is not the case in cold climatic areas.
My wife is a Pino from Cebu. We presently live in Calgary Alberta Canada.
the upsurge of concern for the environment is a positive effect of decades-old efforts of some groups to get attention to issues that deal with the planet, and consequently, with our existence. i’m sure those who are willing to give more than their share of help can contact mr. calabia and give his project that much-needed boost.
Warm greetings !
We would want to inquire the specifications of the trikebayan to include the degree of slope it can traverse, terms of payment and waiting time for its manufacture.
We are adapting the pollution free concept in the island.
Thank you and more power

I am also interested in a DIY prototype, similar to Mr. Calabia’s.
Re: Electric trike, where can I purchase the electric motor and the speed controller. I am based here in cotabato province, Dabaw, Dadiangas or Cagay-an are accessible cities.
Greetings!
We’ve been inspired by the likes of the trikebayan that we wanted to do our share. Our company, Mobius Environmental Movement (MEMo) will soon come out with an electric motorcycle model that can be used for hauling passengers by attaching a sidecar similar to the tricycle. At present, we distribute electric motorcycles (looks like gas powered Honda Wave) and scooters. Although not fit for tricycle duty, our electric motorcycles uses approx. Php10.00 of electricity every 80 to 100 kms. It can carry 1 or 2 riders and a max. speed of 65km/h! Absolutely no gas and no 2T oil is used. Presently, we sell them for Php67,000 You may visit us soon in Marikina City where our showroom is being built or contact us at 632-433-5603 if interested. We are looking for provincial resellers.
Thanks and hoping we all find environment friendlier alternatives for transportation.
